The late 60’s and early 70’s were probably the most turbulent times in the history of Strabane and many of us lived through them. The Town Hall was gone. The Pagoda was gone. The old Convent Grammar School was gone. The Commodore was gone. The Abercorn Arms and Commercial Hotels were gone. So what was left?
The Army was in residence. Disruption to normal life was regular and taken for granted. Growing up in these times was not easy. But here we are, 50 years on and getting on with ‘it.’ We have lived to tell the story.
So what do you remember of the 70s. Michael Kennedy will talk you through the key services, people and businesses still reserving normality and helping people get on with life. So come and tell your story.
Strabane History Society presents the first of the 2026-27 programme on Thursday 24th September 2026 in the Band Rooms, John Wesley Street, off Railway Road, starting time 7.30p.m. All are welcome to attend, please come along and “throw in your tuppence a’penny worth”. The craic is normally good on the reminiscence sessions.
We start this year with two of our stalwarts absent, Treasurer Pat McGuigan and loyal member Aidan ‘Cookie’ Dunne. Both will be truly missed for their individual contributions to the sessions.
Also do not forget the Special Memories Day to celebrate Shirt-making in Strabane in the local library on Friday 25th September 2026 from 1.00 p.m. to 4.00 p.m
